Fearfully & Wonderfully Made

Artist Statement

Hey! Thanks for taking the time to read my artist statement. My name is Gabi Phifer and I’m a sixteen-year old homeschool student. This was my second session here at PV and my mentor was the one and only Justine Miller. I created “Fearfully & Wonderfully Made” using denim, an embroidery hoop and of course a needle and thread. The design displays a large wave with the words from Psalm 139:14 across the top of the hoop.

I had absolutely no idea of what I wanted to create this session, but when Justine was explaining embroidery I was instantly curious and excited to try my hand at it. This was my first time ever trying anything like embroidery and I will definitely be doing more in the future. The inspiration behind the piece came from the well known verse in Psalm 139. The truth that the same God that created the oceans created me has always been such a comfort in my life so I tried to display that, in a much much simplified version in my piece.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to be able to make art & grow spiritually alongside my peers and mentors at PV. I appreciate being able to experiment with new and foreign mediums, it is such a blessing. I love being able to connect with Jesus through the art making process! I want to give a HUGE thank you to the YFC staff and mentors for making PVA possible, and a special thank you to my mentor Justine for introducing me to the wonderful art of embroidery. Lastly, I want to thank my parents for always encouraging me and supporting me in life and in my walk with Jesus!
