Artist Statement

My name is Morgan Madsen, I am 16 years old, and I am homeschooled. My mentor was Matt Hebert. I did two watercolor paintings of the same sunset taken at two different times of the day. I also used chalk pastels and ink to create my piece. The title of my piece is God’s Unique Masterpiece.

I received the inspiration for my piece from a sunset at the lake at our family cabin. Every sunset is so unique and beautiful. I chose this image because I wanted to use chalk and ink as well as watercolors, and the clouds and reeds gave me the opportunity to use them. I wanted to use watercolors because I like the look of that medium and it is easy to blend the colors. I also wanted to use chalk and ink because I don’t use those often and I wanted to try something new.

Something I gained from the art mentoring process was hearing everyone’s life stories which helped me to get to know people more, and understand what they have gone through. It is cool to see how we are all unique and have different life experiences but we still have things in common. I would like to thank my mentor Matt for suggesting that I use an image that I took and to use chalk and ink.
