Artist Statement

Hello everyone, My name is Rachel Foos. I just finished my junior year at Kimball Area High School and my Freshman year at St. Cloud Technical and Community College doing PSEO. I created my piece, Mirrored, out of broken glass and mirror. I soldered the wire to the glass. This was the first time that I had soldered and I was very nervous. I wanted my piece to look kind of like a broken mirror starburst. I thought that it was a cool idea to try and capture a very fleeting moment.

This piece was inspired in a way by my frustration with the world's standard of beauty. The broken mirror is representing the way that people are taught to view their body. God created everyone in his image and it saddens me when I think about the lies that women (and men) tell themselves about their physical appearance.

I want to thank the PVA mentors for making this session possible in this crazy time. I also would like to thank my mentor Shane for helping me not inhale dangerous chemicals while I was making my piece. Also, thank you Angela Chilson for editing this artist statement really late. Sorry about that. Lastly, I want to take a moment to appreciate my fellow artist. Everyone is so friendly and talented. I appreciate you guys. Often it was the highlight of my Tuesday to come to PVA and make art with everyone.
