Artist Statement

My name is David Hasbargen. I am in 11th grade and I do all my school from home. (because I’m homeschooled) For my piece I decided I wanted to do wood burning, and I chose that because wood burning is just kinda the coolest thing ever. My main objective with this project was to somewhat learn how to use a wood burner. Which I feel as though I did accomplish, but I also really feel like I connected with my art piece even though it is pretty simple.

Over my entire seventeen years of existence I have always been a Christian. But oftentimes I feel less “connected” with God then I want to be. However, I know that God has renewed my mind and that even with all the chaos and evil in this world, God will always be faithful and I will continue to grow closer to him. That is where the idea for my work came from. The face represents me (or anyone really) and the scribbles represent all the distractions and chaos around us. But the tree symbolizes the idea of growth and that as long as you continue to “water” your soul and give it “sunlight” you will grow in your love of Christ.

I would like to give a huge thanks to all the leaders for making PV happen this year and for helping me grow as a person. And I would like to give a special thanks to Shane for really being hands on with helping me figure out what the heck I was doing! I was never told I had a specific leader to mentor me but Shane really felt like that to me. I don’t know if I would have ever had a piece without him.
