My name is Grace Rolling. I am in 10th grade, and I have been homeschooled all my life. I began my piece by measuring and cutting two separate pieces of linoleum down to the size of my paper, and sketching my characters on them. Next, I prepared my paper by making a background with watercolor paints. Then I cut the around characters with the carving tools, rolled paint over the top, and pressed them on my paper. I wanted the black character on the bottom to look small and sad, while the angel is vibrant and spreads across the paper.
I’ve always loved the thought of angels being here on earth, even if we can’t see them. It always comforts me to imagine an angel sitting next to me when I’m unhappy or lonely, so that’s the idea that I went with for this project. Sometimes I like to ignore the reality of the spiritual world and try to continue with my daily life like there aren’t bigger priorities, but this attitude is both frustrating and depressing. Being aware of what goes on around us is very important.
I would like to thank all the amazing people in this program with me, you’ve all inspired me to try new mediums and try things outside of my comfort zone. I would especially like to thank Brian, Paul, and Shane, for helping me with the technical parts of my prints and helping me to make it look fabulous.
