Escaping My Mind

Artist Statement

My name is Jadyn Rolling, and I’m an eighth grade homeschooler. I started by taping down a piece of watercolor paper, and creating the character at the bottom. Then, I made the wash for the background and sprinkled salt over it for the effects.

There's lots of questions I have in my everyday life. For me, it’s easy to start to think things like “what does my future hold?” “Am I really worth loving?” “why can’t I do these things right?” and sometimes it gets really bad, and I worry a lot about a lot of things, and the general idea I went for in this piece is the thought of escaping my mind for a while, and by that I mean the toxic parts, the parts that say “you aren't good enough” and “you are a disappointment” because it’s hard to grow a relationship with Christ if your constantly telling yourself you aren’t worthy of that relationship.

I’d like to thank my sister, Grace, for inspiring me to start drawing in the first place, and being my biggest fan all the way through, even when I was feeling discouraged or unmotivated, as well as my sister Amber for being an amazing role model for my relationship with Christ, and always being ready to listen and pray for me. I wouldn’t be able to be where I am today if it weren't for them, and all the other people who have encouraged, inspired, and supported me my entire life.
