My name is Olivia Randall. I am a sophomore at Foley Senior High School. My mentor is Matt Hebert. My piece is called Obscure Faces using oil paint as a medium. I began my piece by using a recycled piece of canvas from a previous artist. I covered the canvas with orange house paint to get a base coat on. I chose to use an old canvas because I liked to see the old becoming something new. I first thought I was going to do a landscape painting, but then I quickly realized that landscapes do not fit me. I have always loved the idea of faces, especially continuous contour faces. The beauty of only using one line to capture a whole face is so inviting to me.
So I began to use oil paints for the first time. A lot of trial and error went into this process. Learning how to mix colors, and learning to be patient because if you know how oil paint works; it is not quick to dry. I also learned how to take compliments on my art. I have never been complimented on something I have created from other people, other than my family. That was truly a learning experience to accept compliments. Learning from Matt was truly a pleasure.
I would like to thank not just Matt but the whole Portable Vision team for this amazing experience. Everyone is so welcoming and encouraging. They always want to push you to do your best, and they want to see you succeed in every aspect of your life, not just in art. Again thank you for being patient with me and hosting this amazing experience.
