2020, new year, new decade, new adventures, new interests, new purpose, right? To briefly sum up how this year is going from my perspective in three words, “torn, confused, and determined.” If I’ve learned anything over the past few months, it’s that I have little control, and that’s okay. I’ve also become much more patient, but don’t get that confused with laziness. God knows what’s best for me, you, us, and them. I’ve noticed a majority of people living life in fear lately, when we should be living in faith. This COVID-19 pandemic has further delayed my life ambitions of becoming a commissioned weather officer in the U.S. Air Force and I think about it every day why my application seemingly continues to get postponed. What is my direction Lord? What path do I take? Which one are you laying out for me? That’s where my art piece becomes relevant.

There’s three primary features I want you to notice: the Youth For Christ (YFC) logo, random marks within each ring, and the dripping stains emanating from the rings and background. The significance of the YFC logo represents the “3story” experience we create with ourselves, others, and God, and the process of becoming intertwined and involved in all three facets. The lines drawn within each circle represent the major throughways that fabricate the “skeleton” of the three towns I’ve called home for the first 24 years of my life. From bottom to top: Mercer, WI, Sun Prairie, WI, and Saint Cloud, MN. I’d like to think the dripping stains embody the blood, sweat, and tears I’ve shed throughout all 3 locations in order to get to where I am today.

Having a stubborn brain concerning my near-term goals, it’s interesting to think where I may physically reside in a month from now, a year from now, 5 years from now. Maybe it’s scary, maybe it’s exciting, or maybe it’s both. These thoughts revert me back to the last 5 verses of James 4, because I love thinking I have complete control of my life and know what are the constants and what are the variables…

Now listen, you who say “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it’s the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them. James 4:13-17.

What is my life, Lord?
What is my direction?
