Break Bread, Not Boards

Artist Statement

A few interesting things happened early this spring. This spring, I thought a lot about bread. I was given a renewed wonder for scripture and I started to skate again.

Looking back, a good chunk of my story was spent on a skateboard. When I stop to think about it, I’ve been stepping on and off those pieces of wood with wheels for over half my life now. This winter/spring, as I started to skate again, I would usually meet with brothers, but a lot of times I’d skate in solitude. This became a valued time for me, a time where I naturally thought deeper thoughts, a time where I would remember God’s character and promises for us. A thought that was coming to my mind often; Lord, I wonder how or when you’ll use skateboarding in my life to tell your story, perhaps for your glory? This thought naturally became a prayer rolling around in my brain whenever I stepped on a board.

Let's talk about bread. I am amazed how Jesus talked about bread quite a bit, in very unique and purposeful ways. Ways where He uses the concept of bread and hunger to teach others about Him and his Father’s word. These words that Jesus spoke meant a lot to me this spring and still do, so I’d be glad to share some of them with you.

“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4

“I am the bread of life, whoever comes to me will never hunger; and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” John 6:35

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied” Matthew 5:6

I have this hope in my heart for everyone that they would be satisfied with Jesus, but I am especially feeling led to bring this hope to the surrounding community of skateboarders. Whether this is at the skatepark, downtown, or elsewhere, I trust the Spirit will lead it all. I'm just going to show up and do my best to step out of the boat in faith.

Break Bread, Not Boards- A hope for future relationships with those who gather for skateboarding, a hope that we would one day “break bread” together, and gather for Christ.
