Artist Statement

My name is Xander Snyder, I'm 16, in 10’th grade and homeschooled. It’s my first year here at Portable Vision. My mentor's name is Paul Burris and he's an awesome guy. My drawing is IDIOCY and I made it with the use of a pen, pencil, and color pencil. I wanted to make my piece look like a comic cover or a poster, so I made them show their “core” emotion (basically the emotion that they show the most). That is what I used to create their personalities.

I created IDIOCY several years back when I was coming up with a different comic idea, I hope to share that one someday. I was originally intending to make at least a couple panels of my comic but I realized that it was a little too much for me at the time, then someone said something about creating a cover for a comic or movie so I decided to do that. I have 6 characters in mind but I realized that I had only figured out 3 of them, so I ended up dropping the other 3 because of time. I chose pen and pencils because they are what I am most comfortable with. I recently picked up the pen to help make the lines stand out. I hope to one day move on to digital art.

I’ve realized through all this that drawing takes a looooonggg time, even drawing something as simple as my drawing. It’s not the drawing itself that took so long but actually all the drawings that I drew before this one. All the hours I spent just to figure out where all the characters were going to be placed and the hours I spent trying to get the characters to look proper on paper. I would like to thank my mentor Paul for helping me figure out what to do, for being there so I could show all my progress to someone, and for giving me advice when I needed it. I want to thank my mother too because even though she kept saying that she knows nothing about art, she still helped me significantly when she said, “Oh I like that guy right there.” It helped me move on and figure out where the characters would be placed in my piece.
