Artist Statement

My name’s Cecilia Qualey but I just go by Cece. I am 14 years old and I go to Apollo High School. My mentors were Jessica Tweten and Aaron Sutton. For my piece I wrote and recorded a song which is called Without You. My song is about six minutes long and represents someone in my life. It represents my love for them and how I feel about them. I wanted my piece to show them that no matter how many bad things happened I still love them and I know they love me as well.

When I was about 11 years old I made some not-so-good choices which affected not only me, but everyone around me. There was one person though who was always there no matter what I did and believed in me no matter how hopeless the situation appeared to be. Those actions alone made me realize how much that person cared for me and this song is to show them that I haven’t forgotten or how I feel about it. That person is still in my life and I know they will never leave or give up on me no matter what. I chose to use the ukulele in my song because it’s my favorite instrument to play and one of the only instruments I can play.

Something I have gained from this experience are new friends who helped me get out the feelings and emotions I put into my song. I also want to thank my mentors, everyone at YFC, and my family for helping me get through this rough year and being with me throughout this crazy time.
