Artist Statement

Hi, I am Sam Macari, as of November I am 17 years old and I am currently a student at Apollo High School. I made “Stages” with ink, alcohol markers, and acrylic paint. My piece began as a little sketch on a small-ish piece of mixed media paper. After changing direction and restarting twice, I was able to create a piece that I felt very proud of.

I feel that, throughout this very odd year, I have changed a lot as a person, as many others have. I made a piece which shows a character transforming through three different stages of their life, all of which being paired with a brand new and totally different lavish look and outfit. I chose this specific way of conveying my characters transformation to allow my audience to fill in the blanks and come up with their own unique story, all of which would most likely be completely different.

I feel that, in constantly getting feedback and suggestions to strengthen my work. Something that I do not often get the opportunity to experience elsewhere, I was able to really push this piece to be as good as it could be.

I would like to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to take this class, my mentors for being incredibly and consistently helpful throughout, and my fellow PV-takers for their constant positivity and encouragement.
