Artist Statement

Hi, My name is Eli Sutton. I’m 13 years old and I homeschooled. My mentor was Shane Mahon. My piece is 7 trumpets in reference to Revelation 8:1 with a silhouetted skyline + a jazzy audio component. I have a wide variety of mediums, to name a few: Pink Insulation Foam, Gold Paint Markers, Gold Acrylic, Portable Speaker, and LED Lights.

So this past couple months with the whole Coronavirus thing going on, I have been dealing with lots of frustration and impatience with myself about some struggles that I’ve been having. My concentration on myself took my focus away from God. The idea of trials and struggles, and finding a new perspective of joy, peace, and spiritual strength, inspired this piece. To represent struggle and trial, I used the 7 Trumpets from Revelation. I knew that I wanted to have an audio part to it because music is very important to me. So, I brainstormed how I could use it. I decided to use jazz music to show the joy in the struggle. I chose to use insulated foam and gold acrylics because they were the best materials to make the trumpets. I used plexiglass to disperse the light to make the LED lights seem more like stars.

Some things that I gained from this session were more friends that I can share my interests with. I was also inspired to share more stuff during my life story because of other students. I want to thank Shane for helping me convey my ideas into a cool art project. I also want to thank the other students in the sculpture studio for being great people to bounce ideas off of. Lastly, and most importantly, I want to thank God for giving me my artistic gifts so that I can have fun and give glory to him. Also thanks to the people coming to view the show, it’s really cool to have people come and view art and read our stories and appreciate it.

Bye!
