This Is My Story

Artist Statement

Hi my name is Sheena, this is my first session mentoring with Portable Vision. I only started to consider myself an artist recently though I’ve long considered myself to be creative. I picked up watercolor because of the stay at home order and quickly have fallen in love with it! Now to the piece itself, a self portrait with lightbulbs. Each light bulb is lined with verses from the Psalms that have lit my path in different seasons of my life. “Your word is a light to my path”. (Psalms 119, 71, 139, 27) Radiating out of each light are lyrics to songs that have spoken to my heart and further illuminated these verses for me.

A big part of PV is sharing our story, a newer experience for me. It requires self-reflection, and transparency. I found this process of hearing others stories and reflecting on and sharing my own both stretching and so encouraging! The more I thought about it the more I realised I wanted my piece to share the deepest parts of my story, the substance that has shaped me beyond what you can see on the outside and that’s God’s work in my life. Without him my life wouldn’t look anything like it does today. I’m so thankful for His Word to lean on in each season and I wanted my piece to reflect that hope and peace found in Him.

I’m so thankful to my family for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of this, especially my husband Christian for encouraging me to step into this. I’d also like to thank my mom and Addie Jansen for creative ideas and critique, your fingerprints are all over this! Thank you to each of the PV students and mentors who have shown me the ropes and shared your stories with me! I’ve absolutely loved this special environment and it's because of each of you who came each week willing to share. Also thank you to those of you viewing this in person and online, being able to share this with you is so valuable to us! Thank you for making the time to interact with our art!
