Artist Statement

My name is Jeremiah Rolling. I am homeschooled and in about my sophomore year. My piece is made of foam, clay, wood, and a lot of superglue. I carved the mountain out of foam, and sculpted the pool out of clay that I filled with resin.

Is my piece introspection or a comment on society? I’m not sure. It could be either one I suppose. The silver cup on top of the mountain represents sin. It looks nice, but pouring out of it is a corrupting liquid. This liquid pools at the bottom and starts to choke out virtues, represented by wooden signs. As it sits, it begins to put up and strengthen new traits, such as anger. On the side of the pool is a little bottle of liquid representing hope. It’s a small amount, but it spreads through the pool, slowly filling it with hope.

I’d like to thank all of the mentors at YFC for sharing their stories and time, especially Shane for his help in the sculpture studio, and Sheena for inspiring me to take up watercolor again. And also the Chilson brothers for being weird and inspiring.
