Concepts for Chapter One

Artist Statement

My name is Samuel Macari, I am seventeen and a junior at Apollo High school. My mentor through this session was Mr. Burris. I dream of becoming a comic creator someday. It was a dream that manifested somewhere during the seventh grade and has persisted, being even stronger now than before. If I want this dream to come true, it is very important that I master the medium of digital art. It is not necessarily “essential” to the process, however, it is very necessary for the sake of time management, I also just love how it looks.

While making this piece, I used a software called “Clip Studio Paint”. This is a relatively inexpensive software that was made with the sole purpose of being a tool for comic creation. Learning it was really fun and interesting. There are so many cool shortcuts that are unique to the medium of digital art, each one feeling like sort of a game changer in it’s own right.

This piece is a cover for my comic, of which is still in development. I chose to do this as a sort of proof-of-concept if I were to ever move forward with the series. I additionally chose a random page out of a few other mock-ups that I made to contribute to this idea. The cover being in color and the page being in black and white is an industry standard, the cover meaning to catch your attention and the page made with timeliness in mind.

I would love to thank my parents for signing me up for, and paying for, this class, on top of continually supporting me throughout my artistic journey. I would also like to thank the mentors for helping me throughout the entire process of making this piece.
